The Ultimaker is a RepStrap with the following key features:

Because of the bowden system and low-mass moving parts, the same amount of layers can be printed as is common. This means that the Z-resolution can be the same, e.g. all the way down to a 10 micron layer height as any other printer.

Ultimaker has its own Wiki, which can be found at: wiki.ultimaker.com. By 2020 the information about the Ultimaker Original is however no longer to be found on the Ultimaker Wiki. So documentation can now be done on the RepRap wiki.

Version 15.04.6 (Ultimaker Marlin)

Ultimaker makes it own host and slicer software, called Cura. This host software can also upload the latest official version of firmware for your printer.

Currently the latest official update of firmware for the Ultimaker Original is version 15.04.6

Ultimaker 2 extended 3d printer

Versions of the 15.04.x firmware, that include the heated bed upgrade (and for UMO+ and more) are also available at Github. Select a different branche (other than 'Master') in order to get/download those versions of the firmware.

Marlin 2.0.x

It is possible to upgrade the firmware to the latest version 2.0.x of Marlin.

How to compile and upload the Firmware to the controller board

If you do not use Cura to upload firmware to the controller board, then you can use Arduino IDE or PlatformIO in order to compile and upload the firmware you get from Github.

Arduino IDE

When using Arduino IDE, you also need to have some 3rd-party libraries installed. Some (or all) of these libraries can be installed in the Arduino IDE by using the library manager, included in the Arduino IDE. Arduino IDE can be downloaded from the Arduino site

PlatformIO

If you choose to use platformIO, then the Marlin.org web site has a good install guide. The platformIO system will automatically manage libraries.

Thermocouple for UMO

The Ultimaker Original (UMO) uses a K-type Thermocouple as the temperature sensor for the hot-end.

On the hot-end assembly there is a small PCB with an AD597 thermocouple sensor chip, which is specifically designed (and laser trimmer), to work well with a K-type sensor. The AD597 chip amplifies the very low-voltage signal (mV range) to the 0-5V range, that is better suited for sensing by an analog pin on the Arduino 2560 chip used on the electronics.

Temperature sensor on the UMO+

The Ultimaker Original Plus (UMO+) changed electronics (to ver 2.x.x), and also changed to a different type of temperature sensor. The new type of temperature sensor is a PT100B type sensor.

UltiController LCD

The UltiController is an LCD and SCcard option for the Ultimaker Original. With the UltiController it became possible to print directly from a gcode file on a SDcard.

Hello there
I have been using S3D since April 17 and I really love it.
So I recommended it to a Friend and finally he purchased it. He is the type of Guy not having a lot technical or Software knowledge. He's owning an Ultimaker2+ and used Cura in the past to slice things.
He used the wizard and added the Ultimaker2+ Profile to S3D.
Now he has following issues when using S3D.
When he slices a Modell and like to print it via SD-Card, the printer has a warning 'this File will override machine settings from the slicer'.
I googled a bit and found out, that the Ultimaker2+ Series has a 'Noob User-friendly Firmware which controls things like Temperatur filament etc via machine settings. So there is no Start or Endgcode. Well, i told him to just click continue and be aware if the printer makes any stupid moves.
But alls it's doing heat up the Bed and then nothing happens.
I guess that's a Problem of the UltiGcode Flavour (What is used in Cura) but in Simplify there are no such Options under the Firmware Type Settings.
In his Ultimaker2+ Profile, It's set up to Marlin/Repetier/Sprinter.
He sent me 2 Gcode Files (1 Sliced with S3D another with Cura) I compared them a bit and like I wrote above there is no Start or Endgcode in the Cura one as it's done by the Firmware. If I had that issue I would experiment by editing the Gcode (generated from S3D) and I am sure I could get it running. But I don't wanna try the risk to send him edited G-codes to mess up his printer since he's not a 3D-Nerd like me.
There are even some other minor differences in those G-code files.
Well, maybe some other Ultimaker 2+ User can help my Friend.

As of the moment, the Ultimaker Series is made up of 3 models.

Print resolution varies per model, from standard 600 layer prints to the top-end 20 micron resolution. The second generation Ultimaker 2+ is a well polished printer with modest improvements to make the entire 3d printing experience better. The price is slightly higher than others in the similar category, but you'll find features here that are missing on those same models. For example the maximum resolution is a amazing 20 microns. Additionally the max print speed is 300mm/sec. Add in zero assembly required aside from putting in the glass plate and doing basic calibration and this printer is very desirable for most anyone to get started or add to their printer collection.

Makers and enthusiasts will be most keen on the 2+ as it features a large build volume, open source filament options and a heated glass build plate. Use of a glue stick to help your first layers adhere plus the being able to remove the build plate easily make for simpler operation. Quick setup out of the box involves installing the build plate and performing basic calibration which is becoming the norm among the industry helping more people get started with less experience.

This printer would be at home just the same in a classroom or in as a first time 3d printer. Users rate it highly for the print quality, ease of operation with the clear and simple LCD screen and improved dual fan print head. The Ultimaker 2 Go is the more portable cousin of the best 3D printer available for consumers as of today. Need a portable 3D printing sidekick that churns out 20 micron layers with 5 micron Z and 12 micron XY precision in a .4mm single head extruder? How about the benefits of being able to take those specifications with you wherever you go? If the answer's yes, then the Ultimaker 2 Go is all you need.

The GO is ideal for the beginner who demands quality, knows they'll love 3d printing and expects to grow with their printer over time without needing to continually upgrade. Also a great gift for the aspiring engineer and maker whether as a graduation present, holidays or birthdays, you can't go wrong.

This 3D machine is compact in terms of dimension, but the weight is a bit on the hefty side. The Ultimaker 2 Go brings in a massive 14kg, and with good reason- the construction, from the outer shell to the innards of the machine is the same as the Ultimaker 2's. It can be a bane when you need to carry it on a flight of stairs, but a boon during the printing process as the weight minimizes wobbling and yields more accurate 3D prints. Of course, the printing speed and quality is top-notch, as expected from one of the foremost 3D printing companies the world has ever seen.

One of the main differences between this machine and its larger predecessors is the print bed, which is uniquely unheated. The materials you may use still remains diverse, but not as diverse as the Ultimaker 2's options, for example. Despite this limitation and smaller build volume, the Ultimaker 2 Go still delivers excellent 3D print solutions and may quickly become your go-to 3D printer for everyday use. It's great as a beginner 3D printer machine, as well as an adequate answer for the consummate 3D printing enthusiast looking for an intuitive and easy 3D printing from start to finish.

Critical Review

Setting up the 3D printer is an unpack-and-plug affair. Find a suitable platform, then get ready to feed the printing filament roll. However, the loading mechanism is quite unusual, and you may need to practice the procedure to get a better feel for it.

Allow the Ultimaker 2 Go full access to the extruder, and you'll be good to go. Don't force the filament forward, or forget it altogether, as you may risk the nozzle part getting stuck and the filament material building up inside. Plug and play individuals may need to brush up on the manual so they can circumvent this potential 3D printing disaster.

The shrunken Ultimaker 2 printer carries easily, but some added designs such as a firm handle or grips would be welcome. Unfortunately, the completed design does not have any clumsy-proof handle or integration of grips like the Lulzbot Mini has.

Printing Performance

Reputation precedes the Ultimaker 2 as the best and the most recommended 3D printer in the world. The exceptionally high 20 micron resolution alone makes it a high-precision 3D printer. It is easy to see why many educators, engineers, enthusiasts and beginners all go for the Ultimaker 2 family of printers.

The 3D printer supports FFF, or Fused Filament Fabrication, a process that melts the plastic, then deposits it into a heated (non-heated with the GO model) glass plate when in additive mode. Speed is not an issue when printing with the Ultimaker 2, as it features an impressive speed range from 30 to 300 max mm per second of operation, giving you the option to print out the things you need in a hurry or to take it slow and steady. Printing resolution per layer is around .02 mm (20 microns), or about the size of a cardstock paper. Should you notice right from the start that the print is imperfect, you can stop operation, fiddle with the settings, then hit resume without ruining the current print or starting over.

Despite its relatively compact size, the Ultimaker 2 can print at any reasonable size without any issues. Most other 3D printers for home use can only print small objects, but this mean machine is made for both home and office use, and as such, can print large creations up to 9x9x8 inches, or about the size of a medium-sized toaster. This alone puts it on top as compared to other 3D printers out there. In comparison the MakerGear M2, another highly decorated 3d printer, features an 8x8x10 build volume that enthusiasts agree is plenty large!

The Extruder

A 2.85mm filament with a special Bowden extruder is what separates the Ultimaker 2 from the small fish 3D printers. Other 3D printer brands such as Leapfrog, Cube, Dremel, and Makerbot make use of a common direct drive extruder, from which the filament-fed motor is attached to an X-Y gantry. Ultimaker 2 is of the Bowden type, where the extruder is found at the back and the filament is fed through a tube, and not the motor's end. What's the difference, you ask? A lot. The print head's mass is reduced, which allows a significantly faster printing process.

3D printer experts know the downside of a Bowden tube extruder is that is takes a while to set up. Loading and unloading is more extensive, and users will need a thicker 3mm filament instead of the more common 1.75mm filaments utilized in direct drive machines, as the Bowden feed starts from the back and feeds through to the print head. There may be some confusion here, because 2.85mm is the actual size, but this type of filament is more widely known as a 3mm filament. If it helps, the 2.85mm works fine with the Ultimaker 2 and is widely available.

Cartridges and Filaments

3D printer newbies should know that a filament is a type of quick-congealing, easy-to-melt plastic string that is molded via the print head's main nozzle while you are 3D printing. Think like soft serve ice cream being extruded from the ice cream machine! You'll find that filaments are not one-size-fits-all, and that there's a wide variety of filaments ranging from material, colors and all that- after all, your 3D creations consist of different building blocks and colors, right?

Among the most popular plastic filaments are ABS and PLA. The Ultimaker 2's heated bed improves adhesion and reduces print failures with a temperature ranging from 50 to 100C during operation. Its hot end was redesigned to reduce the chances of your filaments clogging and jamming, reducing wastage.

As mentioned, the product uses a 3mm open source filaments, but factory-made filaments are highly recommended to keep your Ultimaker 2 running smoothly over a long, long time. Ultimaker's filaments also come in a variety of colors. U-PET filaments can also be used.

Excellent Design

The Ultimaker 2's glass and aluminum-made chassis is solid, stable and quiet. The machine makes a noise level of somewhere around 49 decibels, equal to the humming of your refrigerator while plugged in. There are no excess vibrations, and noise is kept at an absolute minimum. The heated platform feature is especially useful for ABS printing, as it keeps the design and print from warping during the print run. The Ultimaker 2's LCD screen is easily one of the best features of this machine.
